These five pieces were written by Mendelssohn during his studies with Carl Zelter. While still very far from his future more mature works, they show off a still in progress style of composition, and they're actually very nice to hear unlike some earlier works of random composers. The Movement in G Minor includes a G Major passage reminiscent from Haydn and Mozart (a rare tonality on Mendelssohn's world); both Andante and the two fuges features a pretty Bachian tone, with a usual three-voice contrapuntal form, while the Allegro "gets out'' of the darkness and finishes the set on a brillant way!
