미국의 작곡가, 오르간 연주자. 

최초로 전세계적인 명성을 얻은 미국 작곡가이며 U. S. 대학교에서 처음으로 음악교수가 되었다. 포틀랜드에서 철저한 음악 기초훈련을 쌓은 뒤 베를린(1858~61)으로 유학갔다. 1861년 보스턴에서 일련의 오르간 연주회와 강연을 하기 시작했고, 1862년 하버드에서 음악교수로 임명되었다.[(January 9, 1839 – April 25, 1906) was the first American-born composer to achieve fame for large-scale orchestral music. The senior member of a group of composers collectively known as the Boston Six, Paine was one of those responsible for the first significant body of concert music by composers from the United States. The Boston Six's other five members were Amy Beach, Arthur Foote, Edward MacDowell, George Chadwick, and Horatio Parker.]

하버드대학교에서 그가 만든 음악학과는 이후 미국의 다른 여러 음악대학들에 모범이 되었다. 선생으로서나 작곡가로서 미국음악의 발전에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 주로 독일 고전음악에서 출발한 그의 작품에는 2곡의 =========================교향곡=====================

The symphony was composed between 1872 and 1875 and first performed in Boston on the 26th of January 1876.^[

Symphony No. 2 in A major, subtitled Im Frühling or In Spring, is the second symphony by American composer John Knowles Paine. The symphony was composed in 1879 and published in Boston in 1880, at a time when few American composers were able to find publishers for symphonic works. It was also premiered in Boston in 1880, and was extremely well received, prompting handkerchief-waving and shouting at the first performance.

미사곡 D장조(1866~67), 오라토리오 〈성 베드로 St. Peter〉(1872) 등이 있다.
