Eduard von Lannoy

(3 December 1787 - 28 March 1853)

Eduard von Lannoy was a Flemish baron and an expert clarinet player. Born in Brussels, Lannoy settled with his family in Graz in childhood and came of age in the atmosphere of Viennese music that was prevalent in the city. After Lannoy completed a more conventional education in Graz, his father allowed him to return to Brussels, and later, to go to Paris to study music.

From 1806 until his death nearly 50 years later, Lannoy divided his time between Graz and Vienna; in 1818 he joined the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde and ultimately was named to its executive board.

Lannoy maintained strong friendships with figures such as Franz Liszt, Gaetano Donizetti, and Ignaz Moscheles; however, he was closest to fellow clarinetist Count Ferdinando Troyer, the dedicatee

of Franz Schubert's Octet in F major, D. 803. Lannoy was also a successful music teacher and a gifted composer, who composed in a wide ranging number of idioms and genres, including opera.

However, it is his chamber works for clarinet, particularly his outstanding Clarinet Trio in B flat major, Op. 15, that has kept Lannoy's name in circulation.
