Greve was born in Glückstadt, in the then Duchy of Schleswig, in what is now Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. His parents were craftsman Johann Heinrich Greve and Anna Elisabeth Albers. He arrived in Turku in September 1842, as a violinist for the city band. The following year he was asked to conduct the re-established Turku Musical Society. When the organization disbanded in 1846, Greve studied composition and violin at the Leipzig Conservatory. Prior to that, in March 1846, he had arranged a call to Helsinki and its surrounding areas. After returning from his studies, he was conductor of the Turku Crenatorial Battalion. His health began to decline in the spring of 1851, and in July of that year he died of a disease which at that time was diagnosed as "stomach fever". Greve was unmarried at the time of his death, but engaged.
