Early Period Quintets	String Quintet in E-Flat major, Op. 4 The String Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 4, was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1795. It was adapted from his Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103, which, despite its high opus number, was in fact composed by Beethoven in 1792/1793 but was published only in 1837, ten years after the composer's death. The Quintet was published in Vienna in 1796. The Quintet has been viewed as a mere transcription of the Octet. However, there are a few differences between the two works. In the first movement, there are significant changes in the exposition and substantial ones in the development, reprise, and ending. The ensuing Andante employs new themes and involves significant changes in the ones retained. The Scherzo and finale are also substantially different: among other alterations, a second trio was added to the former and a new alternate theme was inserted in the latter.[1]   The quintet is structured in four movements: Allegro con brio Andante Menuetto: Allegretto - Trio I & II Finale: Presto The work is scored for two violins, two violas and cello. A typical performance lasts for about 30 minutes.
Middle Period Quintets	String Quintet in C major, Op. 29
The String Quintet in C major, Op. 29 by Ludwig van Beethoven was composed in 1801.[1] This work is a "viola quintet" in that it is scored for string quartet and an extra viola (two violins, two violas, and cello). As the String Quintet, Op. 4 is an extensively reworked arrangement of the earlier Octet for Winds, Op. 103, the Op. 104 quintet is an arrangement of an earlier piano trio, and the later fugue is a fragmentary work, String Quintet, Op. 29 is Beethoven's only full-scale, original composition in the string quintet genre. Late Period Quintets	String Quintet in C minor, Op. 104   The String Quintet in C minor, Op. 104, by Ludwig van Beethoven is an arrangement of the early C minor Piano Trio, Op. 1 No. 3.[1][2] This work is scored for a string quintet with two violas. The work is structured in four movements: Allegro con brio (C minor) Andante cantabile con Variazioni (E flat major) Minuetto. Quasi allegro (C minor, with a trio in C major) Finale. Prestissimo (C minor, with a tierce de picardie)   Fugue for String Quintet in D major, Op. 137 The Fugue for String Quintet in D major, Op. 137, was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was composed in 1817, and was the only work he completed for string quintet in his late period. After Beethoven's death in 1827, Breitkopf & Härtel published the work, hence the high opus number. The composition is scored for a string quintet with two violas. The Quintettsatz in D minor, Hess 40, is an incomplete composition for string quintet with two violas by Ludwig van Beethoven. Comprising a completed prelude and an incomplete fugue, it was composed in 1817 around the same time as the Fugue for String Quartet in D major, Op. 137

 

Background

From surviving manuscripts, it appears that Beethoven first started work on the quintet around 1815, with sketches of the fugue being found amongst sketches for the Ninth Symphony.^{[1] [2]} It is unclear at this time if Beethoven completed the work.

The composition, which takes around three minutes to perform, is structured as a single movement marked Adagio - Allegro.
