Sir Michael Kemp Tippett OM CH CBE (2 January 1905 – 8 January 1998) was an English composer who rose to prominence during and immediately after the Second World War. In his lifetime he was sometimes ranked with his contemporary Benjamin Britten as one of the leading British composers of the 20th century. Among his best-known works are the oratorio A Child of Our Time, the orchestral Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli, and the opera The Midsummer Marriage.

1923~28년 왕립 음악원에서 작곡을 공부했으며, 1930~32년 R.O. 모리스로부터 개인 레슨을 받았다. 1940~51년 런던대학교 몰리 칼리지의 음악감독으로 재직했으며, 이후 영국방송협회(BBC)방송국 라디오와 텔레비전 해설자로 활동했다. 1966년 기사작위를 받았다. 그의 초기 작품은 보수적이었으나, 이후 불협화적 대위법과 광시곡적인 서정성을 지닌 모더니즘적인 개인 양식을 발전시켰다.

작품으로는 4곡의 교향곡, 현악4중주, 피아노 소나타, 오라토리오 〈우리 시대의 어린이 A Child of Our Time〉(1939~41), 오페라 〈한여름의 결혼 The Midsummer Marriage〉(1946~52)·〈노트 정원 The Knot Garden〉(1966~69), 자작 대본에 의한 〈아이스 브레이크 The Ice Break〉(1973~76)가 있다. 그의 작품은 1960년대까지는 영국에서 자주 연주되지 않았으나 1970년대 접어들면서 미국에서 자주 연주되었다.[다음백과]
