Axel Gade

 

(28 May 1860 – 9 November 1921)

  Danish violinist, composer and conductor. He was the son of Niels Wilhelm Gade.

 in his 2nd marriage. Axel was married to Anna Langgaard and became uncle of Rued Langgaard.

Axel Gade began playing violin early and was 1879-1881 student at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Valdemar Tofte as a teacher. Later, the studies continued at Joseph Joachim in Berlin. Upon returning home he became 1884 violinist in the Royal Chapel and from the 1910 concert champion. In 1918 he became the Knight of Dannebrog.

From 1885 he was a violin teacher at the conservatory and in 1909 he joined the board. He was one of the most prominent violinists of the time, both as a soloist, chamber musician and as a concert master in the Chapel. He appeared occasionally as a conductor. He developed into a rather productive composer in a style that was not very different from the father's.
