1911~15년 제네바 음악원에서 가르쳤으며, 1916년 무용가 모드 앨런이 이끄는 무용단과 함께 미국을 순회했고, 이 순회공연단이 파산하자 뉴욕에 정착했다. 클리블랜드 음악원(1920~25)과 샌프란시스코 음악원(1925~30) 원장을 지냈다. 1930년에 스위스에 갔으나 1939년 미국으로 돌아왔으며 1943년 오레곤 주에 정착했다. 그는 버클리에 있는 캘리포니아대학교에서 여러 해 동안 여름학기마다 작곡을 강의했다.

그의 음악은 클로드 드뷔시, 구스타프 말러, 리하르트 슈트라우스를 비롯한 후기 낭만주의 작곡가들의 영향을 많이 받았다. 인상주의에 대한 그의 관심은 교향시 〈겨울-봄 Hiver-Printemps〉(1905)에 잘 드러난다.

유대적인 주제를 다룬 일련의 중요한 작품들을 작곡했는데, 그중에는 〈이스라엘 교향곡 Israel Symphony〉(1916), 관현악을 위한 〈3개의 유대인의 시 Trois poèmes juifs〉(1913), 첼로와 관현악을 위한 교향시 〈솔로몬 Schelomo〉(1916), 바이올린과 피아노(또는 관현악)를 위한 모음곡 〈바알 솀 Baal Shem〉(1923)이 있다. 바리톤·합창·관현악을 위한 전례 성가 〈신성한 의식 Avodath Hakodesh〉은 유대적 주제와 전례 의식에 걸맞는 성숙한 음악 어법을 구사하고 있다.

다수의 그의 작품이 옛 음악 형식과 20세기 기법을 결합한 신고전주의 경향을 강하게 띠고 있다. 예를 들면 그의 첫 합주협주곡(1925)과 피아노와 현을 위한 5중주(1923)에서는 음악의 정서적 강도와 색채 효과를 높이기 위해 4분음을 쓰고 있다. 또 뛰어난 작품으로는 '서사적 광시곡'(epic rhapsody)인 관현악을 위한 〈아메리카 America〉(1926), 〈비올라와 피아노를 위한 모음곡〉(1919), 현악 5중주 등이 있으며, 이 작품들은 넘치는 힘과 표현의 엄밀함으로 찬사를 받고 있다.[다음백과]

Bloch was born in Geneva on July 24, 1880 to Jewish parents.^[2] He began playing the violin at age 9. He began composing soon after. He studied music at the conservatory in Brussels, where his teachers included the celebrated Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. He then travelled around Europe, moving to Germany (where he studied composition from 1900–1901 with Iwan Knorr at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt), on to Paris in 1903 and back to Geneva before settling in the United States in 1916, taking US citizenship in 1924. He held several teaching appointments in the USA with George Antheil, Frederick Jacobi, Quincy Porter, Bernard Rogers, and Roger Sessions among his pupils. See: List of music students by teacher: A to B#Ernest Bloch. In 1917 Bloch became the first teacher of composition at Mannes School of Music, a post he held for three years. In December 1920 he was appointed the first Musical Director of the newly formed Cleveland Institute of Music, a post he held until 1925. Following this he was director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music until 1930. He spent most of the following decade in Switzerland where he composed his Avodath Hakodesh ("Sacred Service") before returning to the USA in 1939.^[3]

In 1941, Bloch moved to the small coastal community of Agate Beach, Oregon^[4] and lived there the rest of his life. He taught and lectured at the University of California, Berkeley until 1952.

He died on July 15, 1959 in Portland, Oregon, of cancer at the age of 78.^[1] His body was cremated and his ashes were scattered near his home in Agate Beach.^[5]

The Bloch Memorial has been moved from near his house in Agate Beach to a more prominent location at the Newport Performing Arts Center in Newport, Oregon.^[6]

Concerto Grosso No. 1 for string orchestra with piano obbligato is a 1925 concerto grosso composed by Ernest Bloch.^[1][2]

The work was Bloch's first published concerto grosso of two. According to Alexander J. Morin, the work was created in response to complaints by Bloch's students at the Cleveland Institute of Music about "the inadequacies of tonality in shaping the music for the next century."^[3]

Music critic Olin Downes wrote, "The Bloch concerto was on the whole the best written and the most effective of the new works, even though it lacks some of the power and color" of other works.^[4][5] A third concerto grosso evolved into his work Sinfonia Breve
