Józef Władysław Krogulski

(1815-1842)

was a Polish pianist, composer, choral conductor and teacher. He was born in Tarnow to a composer and music teacher, Michael Krogulski, and showed musical promise at an early age. He made his public debut in Tarnow at the age of 9, playing Hummel's A minor Concerto.

This was followed by his Warsaw debut, where he played the Hummel concerto again, and a Concert Rondo ["https://www.youtube.com/embed/0OPPv6vwCeo"] by Friedrich Kalkbrenner. Four years later he was studying with Chopin's teacher Elsner at the High School of Music in Warsaw; taking private lessons with Elsner and Kurpinski even after the school was closed down after the November Uprising.

Like his countryman Chopin, who fled to Paris, Krogulski contracted tuberculosis and eventually died of it in Warsaw at the age of only 27. Unlike, Chopin, however, he was a far more versatile musician, composing an overture for orchestra (D minor, 1831) 3 masses for voices, chorus and orchestra, and some chamber music (including an Octet for piano, string quartet, double bass, flute and clarinet and a Piano Quartet). There were also several piano works, including 2 sonatas. Krogulski also composed a set of concertante variations for piano and orchestra, and 2 piano concertos, but only

the first of these has survived.
