Between 1758 and 1774 he was solo violinist at the Stuttgart court orchestra, a position that enabled him to undertake extensive concert tours to Vienna, Paris, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. Tsarina Catherine II of Russia invited him to a position in St. Petersburg. During that time, Lolli travelled to Warsaw and toured Germany, Scandinavia, Asia and most of the whole of Europe. In 1794, he became primary conductor in Naples.
Apart from a number of violin sonatas, capriccios and a treatise on violin playing, Lolli's main output was of concertos for his own instrument, which he played regularly while touring Europe. Eleven such concertos have been identified, the earliest dating from 1764 when he was employed at the Stuttgart Court. Lolli's motive for writing these pieces was clearly to show his playing off to best advantage, which he appears to have achieved in Russia, given the positive response of audiences particularly during his early years in the country.

Today the violinist-composer Antonio Lolli is almost forgotten. Yet any list of outstanding violin virtuosos of the pre-Paganini epoch would include his name at the very top or close to it. Since the art of the performer is by its very nature transient, it is remarkable that the impact of Lolli's playing and personality persisted even into Paganini's lifetime, a generation later.
