아홉 번째 파도(The Ninth Wave)는 러시아인 바다 화가인 이반 아이바좁스키

의 1850년도 그림으로 가장 인상적인 작품으로 잘 알려져 있는 듯 하다. 이 작품은 폭풍우가 지나간 후의 바다와, 죽음을 직면한 사람들이 난파선의 잔해에 달라붙어 그들 스스로를 구하려고 노력하는 모습이 묘사되었다.

The Ninth Wave (Russian: Девятый вал, Dyevyatiy val) is an 1850 painting by Russian marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky. It is his best-known work.[1][2]

The title refers to an old sailing expression referring to a wave of incredible size that comes after a succession of incrementally larger waves.[3]

It depicts a sea after a night storm and people facing death attempting to save themselves by clinging to debris from a wrecked ship. The debris, in the shape of the cross, appears to be a Christian metaphor for salvation from the earthly sin. The painting has warm tones, which reduce the sea's apparent menacing overtones and a chance for the people to survive seems plausible. Born in Crimea in 1817 to an Armenian family, Aivazovsky is arguably the most famous Russian seascape painter. The quality of his paintings made him one of the most respected artists in Russia, earning him the Gold Medal at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts, and allowing him to open his own school at his hometown of Feodosiya. Aivazovsky painted more than 6,000 works, most notably the famous “The Ninth Wave”, and a large group of large paintings glorifying the Russian Navy. Today, Aivazovsky is the most sought-after 19th century Russian painter, and his works are often sold for more than $3 million at auctions.

 

“The Ninth Wave” is a true masterwork. Aivazovsky reached in this painting an absolute technical perfection, representing a group of unlucky castaways trying to survive under the merciless oceanic waves. Nevertheless, the centre of the composition is the powerful, almost mystical and diffuse representation of the sun, which illuminates the scene with a strange, oneiric range of green and pink shades. This painting is often called “the most beautiful painting in Russia”
