과거 오랜 동안, "영국 민요" 혹은 "아일랜드 민요"로 알려져 있던 곡 입니다만, 최근 밝혀진 이곡의 원곡은 19세기 중후반, 미국의 찬송가 "The Golden Rule" 입니다. 19세기말, 메이지(明治)시대, 개화기 일본에 전래 된 많은 외국곡 중에 하나 입니다.

The song is known to be originated from "English Folk Song" or "Irish Folk Song", however, it's been recently confirmed that it is a Christian Hymn "The Golden Rule" in U.S. The composer is unknown, and the lyrics were written by "I. J. Zimmerman" in mid 19th century. The song was introduced to Japan in 1889, during the Meiji Era.
