Vítězslav Novák

(5 December 1870 – 18 July 1949) was on e of the most respected Czech composers

and pedagogues, almost singlehandedly founding a mid-century Czech school of composition.

Stylistically, he was a leading figure in the neoromantic movement, and his music has been occasionally considered an early example of Czech modernism.

[프라하 음악원에서 드보르자크에게 배웠으며, 1909년 그곳에서 가르치기 시작했다. 그의 초기작품은 독일 낭만주의 음악의 영향을 받았다. 몰다비아를 방문한 것이 큰 영향을 주어 체코슬로바키아 민속음악을 소재로 국민정서가 엿보이는 곡을 작곡하기 시작했다. 드뷔시와 리하르트 슈트라우스의 영향도 받았다.

작품에는 오페라 4곡, 발레곡 2곡, 관현악곡 〈타트라에서 V Tatrach〉·〈슬로바키아 모음곡 Slovakian Suite〉이 있다. 관현악을 위한 〈심연에서 De Profundis〉와 〈5월 교향곡 May Symphony〉은 제2차 세계대전 동안에 쓴 작품이며, 그밖에 〈가을 교향곡 Autumn Symphony〉을 비롯하여 실내악곡·가곡·합창곡들을 작곡했다.[다음백과]

The The Piano Quintet in a minor is the first of a series of works from his so-called Moravian period and was composed in 1897. The work shows his enchantment with Moravia and its folk melodies some of which are included in this work. The first theme of the opening movement is based on the folksong Hear the Earth tremble and moan while the middle movement is based on a 15th century Moravian love song O Elsa, lovely Elsa, while the main theme of the third movement is a paraphrase from a Moravian wedding song.
