그의 작품 수는 적지만 불규칙한 리듬에 의한 고도로 불협화적인 선율과 기복이 큰 셈여림, 풍부한 색채 등 독특한 면모를 갖고 있다.

9세 때 글로버 클리블런드 대통령을 위해 바이올린을 연주했고, 찰스 아이브스, 에드가르 바레즈 등 당시

혁신적이고 영향력 있는 작곡가들과 유대가 깊었지만, 하버드대학교에서 잠시 배운 것을 제외하면 거의

독학했다. 1912년 이후 5년간 미네소타 주 위노나에 자신이 창립한 관현악단에서 지휘했고, 1923~33년

뉴욕 작곡가협회에서 활동했으며 1937년 플로리다에서 작곡을 가르쳤다. 한 자선가로부터 후원을 받아 작곡과 회화에 전력을 기울일 수 있게 되었다.

초기 작품을 스스로 모두 없애버렸기 때문에 몇 작품만 전해진다. 1954년 국립예술원의 회원으로 선출되었고, 1966년 메인 주 보도인대학에서 러글스 음악제를 열었다.

관현악을 위한 〈태양을 밟는 사람 Sun-Treader〉(1927~32)은 그의 작품 중 가장 길고 중요한 곡이다. 이 곡은 매우 불협화적이고 상상력이 넘치는 복잡한 광시곡풍으로, 그의 작품 세계를 잘 대변해준다. 신비주의 시를 좋아한 그는 숭고하고 인상적인 효과를 좇았고, 그결과 평론가들로부터 모호하고 불명료하다는 비판을 받기도 했다.

그는 한 번 쓴 곡을 계속 수정했고, 따라서 한 곡에 여러 변형판이 있다. 그밖의 작품으로 성부와 피아노를 위한 〈장난감 Toys〉(1919)·

He wrote finely crafted pieces using "dissonant counterpoint", a term coined by Charles Seeger to describe Ruggles' music. His method of atonal counterpoint was based on a non-serial technique of avoiding repeating a pitch class until a generally fixed number such as eight pitch classes intervened. He wrote painstakingly slowly so his output is quite small.

Famous for his prickly personality, Ruggles was nonetheless friends with Henry Cowell, Edgard Varèse, Charles Ives, Thomas Hart Benton, Ruth Crawford Seeger, and Charles Seeger. Benton even painted Ruggles in his portrait "The Suntreader". His students include James Tenney and Merton Brown. Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas has championed Ruggles' music, recording the complete works with the Buffalo Philharmonic and occasionally performing Sun-Treader with the San Francisco Symphony. Especially later in life, Ruggles was also a prolific painter, selling hundreds of paintings during his lifetime.
