David Francis Powers (April 25, 1912 – March 27, 1998)^[1] was Special Assistant and assistant

Appointments Secretary to President of the United States John F. Kennedy. Powers served as Museum Curator of the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum from 1964 until his retirement in May 1994.^[2] Powers was a military veteran who had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945.

Powers was also a very close, personal friend of John F. Kennedy.

Life and career

The son of Irish immigrants, Powers was born in the Charlestown section of Boston.^[1]

His father died when he was two-years old.^[1]

During the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Powers and Kenneth P. O'Donnell were riding in the Secret Service follow-up car directly behind the presidential limousine and are seen in the famous Zapruder film. In 1996, the Assassination Records Review Board released three-minutes of film footage captured by Powers in Dallas prior to the assassination.^[3] Powers said he began filming when the motorcade left Love Field but ran out of film at 12:17 p.m before reaching Dealey Plaza.^[3]

Powers and Kenneth O'Donnell co-authored "Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye" (Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1972). ISBN 0-316-71625-1

On March 28, 1998 Powers died of cardiac arrest in Arlington, Massachusetts at the Symmes Medical Center.^[1]

Powers' granddaughter, Jenny Powers, gained fame as a Broadway actress and performer. An ardent Democrat like her grandfather, she was asked to sing the National Anthem at the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.

Allegations of impropriety

Judith Campbell Exner in her 1977 autobiography Judith Exner: My Story alleged that Powers assisted in setting up encounters with President Kennedy. Powers would later state that Kennedy never had an affair with Exner.^[4] In her 2012 book, Once Upon a Secret: My Affair with President John F. Kennedy and Its Aftermath, Mimi Alford claimed that once she was swimming with President Kennedy while David Powers looked on and she got out of the pool and gave Powers oral sex after the President had swum over to her and whispered in her ear the instruction to do so.

존 F 케네디 대통령(이하 JFK) 집권 당시 백악관에서 인턴으로 근무했던 미미 앨포드가 18개월간에 걸친JFK와의 불륜관계를 적나라하게 묘사한 회고록을 5일 출간했다.

앨포드는 ‘원스 어폰 어시크릿’이라는 제목의 이 회고록에서자신의 처녀성을 앗아간 JFK가 흔히 '포퍼'라 불리는 가스최음제를 흡입하도록 강요했을 뿐 아니라 그가 지켜보는 가운데 친구와 관계하도록 명령했다고 폭로해 파문이 일고 있다.

영국 데일리메일이 발췌한 회고록에 따르면 앨포드는 1962년 케네디로부터 백악관의 수영장 파티에 초대받고 방문해 영부인의 침실에서 그와 처음으로 성관계를 맺었다. 인턴으로 고용된 지 4일 만이었다.

"수영장 파티에서 칵테을 몇 잔 마신 후 JFK는 나를 침대로 이끌었다. 그는 내 셔츠의 단추를 풀러 내 가슴을 손으로 어루만지기 시작했다. 이내 내 속옷을 벗기고 자신도 바지를 벗기 시작했다"며 당시 상황을 자세하게 묘사한 앨포드는 "그것은 나의 첫경험이었다"고 고백했다.

거부하지 않은 자신의 행동에 대해서는 "미국에서 가장 인기있고 힘있는 남자를 욕망했던 것은 사실"이라면서 "그것은 내가 줄 수 있었던 '최고의 대답'이었다"고 설명했다.

이어 앨포드는 JFK가 자신에게 성욕을 증가시킨다고 알려진 마약성분의 가스 최음제를 흡입하도록 권유했으며 자신이 이를 거부하자 코밑에 최음제를 갖다 대 강제로 흡입케 했다고 주장했다.

앨포드의 충격적인 고백은 계속됐다. JFK가 앨포드에게 JFK의 가장 친한 친구인 데이브 파워스와 관계를 맺도록 지시했다고 폭로한 것이다.

앨포드는 "그것은 정확하게는 구강성행위(Oral sex)를 의미하는 것이었다"면서 "대통령은 그저 아무말없이 나를 지켜봤다"고 말했다.

이들의 불륜 관계는 앨포드가 대학으로 돌아가기 위해 백악관 인턴을 그만둔 뒤에도 계속됐다.

JFK가 암살되기 불과 7일 전까지도 두 사람은 잠자리를 함께했으며 그 자리에서 JFK는 "너도 나와 함께 텍사스에 같이 가면 좋겠다, 다녀와서 전화할게"라고 말했다고 앨포드는 털어놨다.

JFK가 첫 아들 패트릭을 잃었을 때에도 앨포드는 그의 곁을 지켰다. "그는 방바닥에 쌓여 있는 위로 편지를 소리 내서 읽다가 가끔 소리내 눈물을 흘리기도 했다"고 앨포드는 당시를 회상했다.

1962년 쿠바 미사일 위기 당시에 대해서도 털어놨다. 앨포드의 따르면 양국 간의 위기가 고조되자 JFK는 "나의 아이들이 죽는 것보다는 빨갱이가 되는 편이 낫다"며 한발 물러설 뜻을 비추기도 한것으로 알려졌다.
