Eduard Causella was born in Iasi (22nd May, 1841) into a family with a long musical history (Philipp Caudella, his grandfather, was a composer and teacher; Francis Sefarin Caudella, his father, was a cellist; Leopoldina Tuczek, a cousin, was a singer at the Imperial Opera of Vienna), Eduard Caudella studied in Iasi, Berlin, Dreischenheim, Paris and Frankfurt am Main, having as teachers Henri Vieuxtemps, Hubert Riss, Lambert Massart and Delphin Allard. Although in his youth he had started his career as a violinist (he toured to Russia, Germany, Austria and France),he preferred to come back to his homeland and dedicate himself to composition and musicology (he was a violin teacher for four decades and the director of the Iasi School of Music).
A group of disciples gathered around this exceptional musician (George Enescu, Constantin Bobescu, Alexandru Zirra, Enrico Mezzetti, Ion Ghiga, Antonin Ciolan, Athanasie Theodorini, Mircea Bârsan) and they contributed to the affirmation of a music school within the national background.
Caudella died at the patriarchal age of 83 (15th April, 1924).
