Ruperto Chapí was born in Villena, near Alicante, Spain in 1851. His works are mainly operas, zarzuelas (Spanish style opera) and chamber music. Nonetheless, at the beginning of his career, he wrote symphonic pieces in the dominant styles of the Continent. While his Symphony in D major reflects the Viennese Classical School, his Fantasía Morisca is closer to the exotic style promoted by French opera composers Bizet and Massenet. This suite was originally composed for military band, but it was orchestrated in 1879; its nature is without any doubts, Moorish-Spanish.
