Alfred Hill

(16 December 1869 – 30 October 1960)

was an Australian/New Zealand composer, conductor and teacher.

Newly discovered String Quartet from 1890

Alfred Hill’s string quartet ‘Lento sostenuto, Menuett, Andante, and Scherzo’ pre-dates his String Quartet No.1. Written in 1890 while a student at Leipzig Conservatory, it seems the work was not performed at the time, but one of its movements was re-purposed in another Hill string quartet, as well as being orchestrated for one of his early symphonies.

Research undertaken by American ethnomusicologist-composer Thomas Erik Nielsen, with support from long-time Hill scholar Donald Maurice, has resulted in the reconstituting of the original quartet, which receives its first recording in this Resound film at the hands of the Dominion String Quartet: Yury Gezentsvey (violin), Rosemary Harris (violin), Donald Maurice (viola) and David Chickering (cello).

Produced and filmed by Chris Watson from SOUNZ (Centre for New Zealand Music) with audio recorded by Roy Carr at the New Zealand School of Music - Te Koki.

Resound is funded by NZ on Air.
