J. Haydn
- Hob VII:deest Clarinet Concerto in B flat major
Set in 3 movements:
1. Allegro (0:00)
2. Adagio (9:46)
3. Rondo: Allegro (18:01)
According to the liner notes, the manuscript was found in the collection of Prince Bentheim-Burg Steinfurt. It bears the name Göttling on the title page and the mention "Haydns creatio" at the heading of the flute part. Klöcker attributes that concerto to Haydn on the following grounds:
1. Fétis' mention about a clarinet concerto by Haydn in his "Biographie universelle des musiciens" might have to be taken truthfully unlike the view that many scholars take on Fétis' mistake confusing clarinetto with clarino.
2. No Göttling, as composer or copyist, has ever been mentioned in archives, historical accounts or musical research.
3. Prince Ludwig Wilhelm von Bentheim-Steinfurt, a flutist performing as soloist in his orchestra, had close contacts with Esterhazy and might have written Haydn's name himself in the manuscript.
4. Stylistic evidence (no further explanation) that it is from the last period of Haydn's creativity.
Performers: Dieter Klöcker, clarinet; Prague Chamber Orchestra.
