Onna-Musha (女武者, lit. "Female Martial Practitioner")--or Onna-Bugeisha (女武芸者,lit. "Female Martial Arts Practitioner")--is a term referring to female warriors in pre-modern Japan.[1][2] These women engaged in battle alongside samurai men mainly in times of need.[3][4] They were members of the bushi (samurai) class in feudal Japan and were trained in the use of weapons to protect their household, family, and honour in times of war.[5][6] They also have an important presence in Japanese literature, with Tomoe Gozen and Hangaku Gozen as famous and influential characters examples representing onna-musha.[3]

There were also Besshikime (別式女,lit. "Sentinel Martial Women"), female guards of the harems and residences of the wives and concubines of Daimyo and clan leaders.
