The Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello, Op. 8, is a composition in G minor composed by Frédéric Chopin and dedicated to Antoni Radziwiłł. It has four movements:

1. Allegro con fuoco
2. Scherzo
3. Adagio sostenuto
4. Finale: Allegretto

The piece has established itself as a core member of the piano trio repertoire. In a letter to his friend Tytus Woyciechowski dated 31 August 1830, Chopin speculates whether he should have written the violin line for viola, believing that the viola's timbre would "accord better with the cello". Emanuel Ax is of the opinion that it is perhaps fortunate that Chopin scored the work for a standard piano trio, since so few trios with viola exist.

 

A typical performance lasts approximately 25 minutes.

쇼팽이 피아노 이외의 악기를 위해 쓴  몇 안 되는 곡 중 하나인 이 트리오를 쓴 때는 그가 본격적으로 이름을 알리기 이 전인 1828년에서 1829년 사이 바르샤바 시절이다. 1820년 대에 쇼팽은 빈을 여러 번 방문하면서 꽤 많은 음악적 영감을 얻은 것으로 알려졌는데 이 때 받은 자극과 스승, 친구들의 독려로 그는 몇 곡의 실내악과 협주곡 등을 작곡할 계획을 세웠다고 한다. 게다가 당시 바르샤바 음악학교 성악과 학생인 콘스타치아를 사모했던 내성적인 쇼팽은 그의 심정을 그녀에게 털어놓을 수가 없어 고민하고 하다가 <피아노 협주곡 제2번 f단조>(특히 이 곡의 제2악장<아다지오>는 그녀에 대한 사모의 정을 담은 사연을 가지고 있다.)등을 작곡한 후 그녀에게서 멀리 떨어진 외국으로 갈 것을 결심하고 1830년 11월1일 그의 나이 20세 때 바르샤바를 떠나 빈으로 갔다. 이 곡의 완성에도 역시 프랑콤이 큰 영향을 주었다.(정문규 미술관)
