합주협주곡(合奏協奏曲, concerto grosso)

바로크 시대(1600경~1750경)의 대표적 관현악 음악. 복수형은 concerti grossi.

몇 개의 독주악기군(솔로·콘체르티노·프린치팔레라고도 함)과 전체 관현악단(투티, 콘체르토 그로소, 리피에노라고도 함)의 대비가 특징이다.

초기 합주협주곡 제목들에는 연주 장소를 나타내는 것이 많은데, 교회협주곡(concerto da chiesa)·실내협주곡(concerto da camera : 궁정에서 연주) 등이 그것이다. 그러나 이런 제목들은 합주협주곡에만 엄격하게 국한되어 붙여진 것은 아니다. 결국 합주협주곡은 세속 궁정음악으로 꽃피게 된다.

전형적인 악기 편성은 당대의 대표적 실내악인 트리오 소나타의 편성과 마찬가지로 2대의 바이올린과 계속저음(첼로와 같은 저음 선율악기, 하프시코드와 같은 화성악기가 담당함)으로 되어 있으며 관악기도 흔히 사용되었다. 리피에노(전체 관현악단 연주)는 보통 계속저음을 지닌 현악 오케스트라로 구성되었으며, 목관악기나 금관악기가 보충되기도 했다.

아르칸젤로 코렐리(1653~1713)를 시작으로 주세페 토렐리(1658~1709), 안토니오 비발디(1675경~1741, 합주협주곡보다는 독주협주곡에 공헌)에 이르면서 다양한 악장수 대신 빠름-느림-빠름이라는 3악장 구성을 굳히게 되었다. 빠른 악장은 흔히 리토르넬로 구조를 사용했는데, 이것은 반복부(리토르넬로)가 독주자들이 담당하는 에피소드 부분과 교대되었다.

합주협주곡은 1750년경 게오르크 프리드리히 헨델의 작품6(1740)에서 절정에 이른 후 쇠퇴하여 독주협주곡에 자리를 내주게 되었다. 20세기에 들어와 이고리 스트라빈스키와 헨리 코웰 같은 작곡가들이 합주협주곡을 부활시키려는 시도를 했다.[다음백과]

 

The concerto grosso (pronounced [konˈtʃɛrto ˈɡrɔsso]; Italian for big concert(o), plural concerti grossi [konˈtʃɛrti ˈɡrɔssi]) is a form of baroque music in which the musical material is passed between a small group of soloists (the concertino) and full orchestra (the ripieno or concerto grosso). This is in contrast to the solo concerto which features a single solo instrument with the melody line, accompanied by the orchestra.

The form developed in the late seventeenth century, although the name was not used at first. Alessandro Stradella seems to have written the first music in which two groups of different sizes are combined in the characteristic way. The name was first used by Giovanni Lorenzo Gregori in a set of ten compositions published in Lucca in 1698.[2]

The first major composer to use the term concerto grosso was Arcangelo Corelli. After Corelli's death, a collection of twelve of his concerti grossi was published. Not long after, composers such as Francesco Geminiani, Pietro Locatelli, and Giuseppe Torelli wrote concertos in the style of Corelli. He also had a strong influence on Antonio Vivaldi.
