20세기 전반기에 영국 민족음악운동을 개척했다.

케임브리지대학교 트리니티 칼리지에서 공부했고, 런던 왕립 음악 칼리지에서는 19세기 영국 음악의 부흥을 주도한 두 인물인 찰스 스탠퍼드 경과 허버트 패리 경에게 배웠다.

1897~98년에 베를린에서 당대의 저명한 작곡가 막스 브루흐한테 배웠고, 1909년 파리에서 모리스 라벨에게 배웠다. 1903년경에 민요를 수집하기 시작했고, 1904~06년에 〈영국 찬송집 The English Hymnal〉을 편집했으며 그 중 유명한 〈모든 성자를 위하여 Sine Nomine〉를 작곡했다. 제1차 세계대전 때 포병으로 복무한 후 왕립 음악 칼리지 작곡과 교수로 일했다. 영국 민요 연구와 튜더 왕조 시기의 영국 음악에 대한 관심으로 민요와 중세 음계에 기초한 선법적 요소와 자유분방한 리듬을 강조한 개인 양식을 구사했다. 그의 음악 양식은 고도로 개인적인 차원을 이루었을 뿐 아니라 영국의 전통적 기반을 갖추고 있었다(→ 색인 : 민속음악).

그의 작품에는 관현악·극음악·실내악·성악 작품들이 포함된다. 3곡의 〈노퍽 광시곡 Norfolk Rhapsodies〉(나중에 2·3번으로 축소), 특히 1번 E단조(1906 초연)는 민요적 윤곽을 본 윌리엄스 특유의 선율, 화성 양식 속에 융화시킨 최초의 예였다. 9개의 교향곡은 광범위한 표현 영역을 포괄하며, 특히 2번 〈런던 교향곡 London Symphony〉(1914, 개작 1915, 1918, 1920, 1934)과 7번 〈남극 교향곡 Sinfonia Antarctica〉(1953, 1949년에 제작된 영화 〈남극의 스콧 Scott of the Antarctic〉의 배경음악 각색) 등이 인기를 누렸다. 그밖에 관현악곡으로 〈토머스 탈리스 주제에 의한 환상곡 Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis〉(1910), 피아노 협주곡(나중에 2대의 피아노와 관현악을 위한 곡으로 편곡됨), 오보에 협주곡, 튜바 협주곡, 하모니카와 관현악을 위한 〈로망스 Romance〉(1952) 등이 있다. 〈천로역정 The Pilgrim's Progress〉(1951), 춤을 위한 가면극인〈욥 Job〉(1931) 등의 극음악 작품들은 그의 진지하고 신비주의적인 노선을 나타내 준다. 발라드 오페라 〈소몰이 휴 Hugh the Drover〉(1924)는 민요에 대한 관심에서 만든 곡이고, 〈바다로 가는 기사들 Riders to the Sea〉(1937)은 존 밀링턴 싱의 희곡으로 만든 작품이다. 여러 편의 아름다운 노래 중 〈웬로크의 벼랑 on Wenlock Edge〉(1909, A. E. 하우스먼의 시에 붙임)은 테너, 현악 4중주, 피아노를 위한 연가곡으로 나중에 테너와 관현악을 위한 곡으로 개작되었고, 〈5곡의 신비한 노래들 Five Mystical Songs〉(1911)은 조지 허버트의 시에 붙인 곡이다. 그의 합창곡 중에서 무엇보다 주목할 만한 작품은 〈미사 G단조〉, 칸타타 〈미지의 세계를 향하여 Toward the Unknown Region〉(1907),〈우리에게 평화를 주소서 Dona Nobis Pacem〉(1936), 오라토리오 〈성스러운 도시 Sancta Civitas〉(1926) 등이 있으며, 그밖에 여러 파트송, 찬미가, 민요 편곡 들이 있다.

그는 헨델·멘델스존 등을 비롯한 독일의 작곡가들이 대대로 영국을 음악적인 면에서 독일의 속국으로 생각해온 현상을 극복하기 위해 유럽 대륙과의 연계를 끊어버렸다. 에드워드 엘가 경, 허버트 패리 경, 찰스 스탠퍼드 경 등 영국의 음악 부흥기를 장식한 그의 선배 작곡가들은 계속하여 대륙 음악과 관계를 맺고 있었으나, 그는 영국 민요를 민족음악 양식의 원천으로 생각하고 이것에 관심을 집중시켰다. 그런 점에서 그는 러시아의 모데스트 무소르크스키, 체크의 베드리치 스메타나, 스페인의 마누엘 데 파야 같은 민족음악 작곡가들과 비슷했다.

Ralph Vaughan Williams  (12 October 1872 – 26 August 1958) was an English composer. His works include operas, ballets, chamber music, secular and religious vocal pieces and orchestral compositions including nine symphonies, written over sixty years. Strongly influenced by Tudor music and English folk-song, his output marked a decisive break in British music from its German-dominated style of the 19th century.

Vaughan Williams was born to a well-to-do family with strong moral views and a progressive social outlook. Throughout his life he sought to be of service to his fellow citizens, and believed in making music as available as possible to everybody. He wrote many works for amateur and student performance. He was musically a late developer, not finding his true voice until his late thirties; his studies in 1907–1908 with the French composer Maurice Ravel helped him clarify the textures of his music and free it from Teutonic influences.

Vaughan Williams is among the best-known British symphonists, noted for his very wide range of moods, from stormy and impassioned to tranquil, from mysterious to exuberant. Among the most familiar of his other concert works are Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (1910) and The Lark Ascending (1914). His vocal works include hymns, folk-song arrangements and large-scale choral pieces. He wrote eight works for stage performance between 1919 and 1951. Although none of his operas became popular repertoire pieces, his ballet Job: A Masque for Dancing (1930) was successful and has been frequently staged.

Two episodes made notably deep impressions in Vaughan Williams's personal life. The First World War, in which he served in the army, had a lasting emotional effect. Twenty years later, though in his sixties and devotedly married, he was reinvigorated by a love affair with a much younger woman, who later became his second wife. He went on composing through his seventies and eighties, producing his last symphony months before his death at the age of eighty-five. His works have continued to be a staple of the British concert repertoire, and all his major compositions and many of the minor ones have been recorded.
