Laura Netzel: Piano Concerto E minor op. 84

who sometimes used the pseudonym N. Lago.

The piano concerto E minor op. 84 is her largest work but she also composed cantatas, music for recitation and orchestra and a suite for violin and strings. The piano concerto is mentioned in a 1897 issue of a Swedish music magazine so it presumably was composed during the last years of the 19th century. The concerto is a richly orchestrated romantic oeuvre with some French influence, e.g., in the inclusion of the harp in the orchestra. The first movement is in modified sonata form with the exposition theme being repeated in the recapitulation. The first theme group with is highly sonorant melody is typical of the woman composers of late 19th century Sweden, such as Elfrida Andrée and Helena Munktell. The second movement alternates between reflective passages and grandiose orchestral interludes, as well as the recapitulation of the second theme group by the soloist in virtuoso manner. The Finale is a lively Tarantella, of which the last pages have been lost and are here completed by the Music Society of Savonia.
